Provisional patent applications, or PPAs, are a useful tool, but only when they are done right. They are like shape shifters between the Good The Bad and the Ugly.

What is a provisional patent application?

A provisional application for patent is an optional precursor to filing non-provisional utility patent applications – often referred to as “regular” or “conventional” applications.

Provisional and Non-Provisional patent applications are both utility patent applications and while they differ in certain aspects, they share some of the same requirements.

So, in order to obtain the benefits a PPA has to offer, the Applicant MUST meet certain statutory requirements.
