Brian, Senior Counsel, is a patent attorney with substantial experience in patent prosecution, global patent portfolio development and management, and technology transactions. As a former in-house attorney, Brian brings a highly client-centered focus to his practice. Brian has prosecuted patent applications in the fields of medical devices, LED lighting, water purification, oil & gas equipment, automotive components, hard drives, and numerous other areas.
Most recently, as the Director of IP and Commercial Contracts at Intematix Corporation, Brian managed a global portfolio of several hundred issued and pending patents. He developed tools for evaluating and ranking the strength and value of each, in order to align the portfolio with the business and to focus the most resources on the most important IP. In addition, he developed a strategy to leverage accelerated US prosecution and the Patent Prosecution Highway to reduce costs and time-to-patent. Brian also handled a diverse array of technology agreements, including NDAs, joint development agreements, and licenses.
Previously, Brian was the sole attorney at Cardica, a Redwood City company engaged in R&D and manufacturing of heart bypass tools and surgical staplers. Brian handled all IP matters , and personally wrote and prosecuted over 100 patent applications. Prior to his in-house experience, Brian was an associate at Lyon & Lyon and later at Skjerven Morrill MacPherson. Brian is a graduate of USC Gould School of Law. Prior to law school, he was an engineer at McDonnell Douglas Space Systems Company in Huntington Beach, California, performing systems integration and interface control for the International Space Station program.
Brian is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and is a member of the California Bar Association. In his spare time, Brian enjoys photography, homebrewing, and travel.
